CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Mason stalked around to the front of the house as the wind buffeted him. The others trailed after, looking like sad little ducklings waddling behind their mother. Above our heads the storm crackled and churned, and the wind shrieked past the cliff. One of the broken chairs slid across the lawn, and I grabbed my shirt to keep it from blowing up over my head. Only seven of us left, and I was feeling very small and alone.

It was getting harder to be heard over the weather. The wind stole our breath and dragged it right out of our lungs. I finally gestured for everyone to head back inside, trusting the house not to collapse around our ears for a little while yet.

We huddled in the parlor, tense and ready to evacuate if the house made any dangerous noises. Tessa stared bleakly out the window, the clouds still rolling angrily across the sky. I couldn’t believe the sun was still up. It was dark as midnight out there.

Jamie wrung her hands over and over as she sat perched on the sofa. I didn’t know anyone actually did that outside of melodramas. “What are we going to do?”

Tessa shook her head from her vigil by the window. “This is a nightmare. The Senior Council is gone, the rest divided, and the ritual that was meant to reinforce the Akasha, backlashed. Can you feel it? The power is tearing at the barrier like it’s made of tissue paper.”

She was right. I could feel it.

The barrier was eroding, more and more power seeping into the world.

Will scrubbed his face with his hands, skin rasping against the growth of hair on his jaw. “We need to stay calm. Harrying off on a fool’s notion won’t help anyone.”

Sean turned his cigarette over in his hands but didn’t try to light it. His once gelled hair lay limp against his scalp. “Fuck. Where could they have gone?”

Oliver leaned forward, his head in his hands. “If they’re even still alive.”

Jamie choked back a quiet sob, and I shot Oliver a dirty look. “Dude, you’re not helping.”

Koji frowned, his dark eyes intent. “If we can’t find them, maybe we can help them find us.”

Everyone perked up. That sounded like a good plan. I was ready to try anything. Koji frowned, obviously turning the thought over in his head before he continued. “What if we made a signal? Like a lighthouse?”

Excitement bubbled up. It sounded logical to me, and from the expressions on everyone else’s faces, they agreed. Maybe the others hadn’t come back because they’d gone further than we thought and needed something to guide them home.

I glanced around at the group, considering. “Hey, where are you all from, anyway? I assume you’re not local.” We’d never really gotten past names.

Sean gave a sad little laugh. “Why’s that, Red? We don’t have the Boston drawl? I’ll pahk the cah at Hahvahd.”

The overblown, drawn-out words made me shake my head. The only thing more annoying than people doing impressions of a Boston accent were people making ginger jokes.
